E. Guigal La Turque: A Côte-Rôtie Icon at Aurum Lounge

E. Guigal La Turque: A Côte-Rôtie Icon at Aurum Lounge

There are wines that demand context. Not a score, not a tasting note rattled off in thirty seconds — but a room with the right light, a glass held unhurriedly, and people around the table who understand what silence between sips actually means. E. Guigal's La Turque is one of those wines. And Port Andratx, as it happens, is one of those places.

The Côte-Rôtie and the Question of Patience

The Côte-Rôtie — the "roasted slope" — sits at the northern tip of the Rhône Valley, where the granite hillsides are so steep that every harvest is an act of physical commitment. Syrah grown here does not announce itself loudly. It arrives slowly, layered, with a smoky mineral depth and a floral lift — violet, olive, cured meat, dark fruit — that unfolds over years, sometimes decades, in bottle.

La Turque is among the three single-vineyard Lala wines that Marcel Guigal began releasing in the 1980s, each drawn from a distinct parcel on the Côte Brune. What makes La Turque remarkable — beyond the intensity of its terroir expression — is its proportion of Viognier co-fermented with Syrah: a traditional Rhône practice that softens the wine's architecture while amplifying its aromatic complexity. The result is something that resists easy categorisation. It is powerful and yet precise. Dense and yet luminous.

This is exactly the kind of wine that rewards the kind of tasting we practise at Aurum Lounge.

Why E. Guigal at Aurum Lounge

We did not add E. Guigal to our programme because the name carries weight — though it does. We added it because the philosophy aligns. Guigal is, at its heart, a family operation: generations of obsessive attention to specific plots of land, a refusal to standardise, and a belief that wine is inseparable from the people and the place that produce it. That is precisely the conversation we want to have in Port Andratx.

At Aurum Lounge, every wine we present arrives with a story that goes beyond the label. Our broader programme includes more than 50 boutique producers — among them estates like ZALUD, Marchesi di Grésy, Louis Latour, and a range of Mallorcan bodegas including Son Amaret, Margalida Llompart, and Serral — each chosen because they represent something irreducible about their origin. Guigal and La Turque belong in this company not as a trophy wine, but as a reference point: a reminder of what happens when a family devotes itself entirely to a single hillside over generations.

Tasting La Turque: What to Expect

If you encounter La Turque at one of our wine tastings in Mallorca, come prepared for a wine that does not give everything at once. In its youth, it can seem almost reticent — the oak integration from Guigal's famously long élevage still finding its equilibrium with the fruit. With time in the glass, or with the right food alongside it, the wine opens into something genuinely moving.

We pair it with care. The tapas we serve at our tastings are chosen not as decoration but as genuine partners to the wine — traditional recipes rethought in light of what is in the glass. With a wine of this structure and aromatic depth, the kitchen conversation matters as much as the cellar one.

What La Turque Asks of the Taster

  • Time: allow the wine to breathe and evolve across the tasting
  • Attention to texture as much as flavour — the tannin architecture here is its own language
  • An openness to the Viognier co-fermentation: the floral lift is not incidental, it is structural
  • Curiosity about the vintage: La Turque reads its year honestly and without apology

Port Andratx as the Right Setting

There is something fitting about tasting a wine from a steep, sun-baked hillside while looking out over the Mediterranean from Port Andratx. The Côte-Rôtie and the western coast of Mallorca share a certain quality of light — intense, clarifying, unforgiving of anything mediocre. The island has its own winemaking tradition, its own terroir-driven producers, its own argument for why place matters. Exploring a Northern Rhône icon in this context is not a contradiction; it is a conversation.

As a private members club, Aurum Lounge offers its members more than twenty exclusive events each year — intimate evenings with producers, vernissages alongside the Associació Kinsky Collection of Modern Art, and tastings that move between regions and philosophies with intention. The thread connecting all of it is the same: the belief that wine, art, and cuisine are not amenities but entry points into a deeper understanding of where we are and who made it possible.

Mallorca, experienced at this level, is a different island entirely.

Join Us in Person

The most direct way to understand what we mean is to come. Our next Monthly Wine Tasting takes place on 30 October 2026 at 19:00 in Port Andratx — an open, publicly accessible evening where wines like La Turque find their moment in good company, with food that earns its place on the table and conversation that tends to run late.

Reserve your place at the October tasting here, or browse all upcoming events to find the evening that suits you. We look forward to opening something worth talking about together.
