E. Guigal La Turque: A Rhône Icon at Aurum Lounge

E. Guigal La Turque: A Rhône Icon at Aurum Lounge

The Weight of a Single Vineyard

There are wines that arrive at the table carrying the full gravity of a place. La Turque is one of them. Produced by E. Guigal from a narrow, precipitously steep parcel on the Côte-Rôtie — the "roasted slope" above the Rhône near Ampuis — it belongs to a small canon of wines that require no introduction among those who truly know wine. And yet, in the wrong setting, even the greatest bottle can feel out of place. Context matters. Occasion matters. The company in which a wine is opened shapes everything that follows.

At Aurum Lounge in Port Andratx, we think about this constantly. It is why we chose to work with E. Guigal — and why La Turque, in particular, finds something close to its ideal moment here, on the western edge of Mallorca, where the light falls differently and conversation tends to slow down in the best possible way.

Côte-Rôtie: Terroir as Drama

The Côte-Rôtie is not a comfortable appellation. The granite and schist slopes demand everything from the vines and, historically, from the people who tend them. Syrah — the sole permitted red grape — translates this effort into something almost paradoxical: a wine of considerable power that is simultaneously refined, aromatic, and capable of extraordinary longevity. The signature violet and olive note, the dark fruit threaded through with iron and smoke, the tannins that grip without aggression — these are not accidents of winemaking. They are the direct expression of soil, slope, and restraint.

E. Guigal understood this before most. The family's commitment to extended ageing in new oak — a choice that was once controversial and is now simply acknowledged as part of the house's identity — transformed the perception of the appellation internationally. La Turque, alongside La Mouline and La Landonne, became one of the so-called "La La" wines: a trilogy that redefined what Northern Rhône Syrah could be.

What Makes La Turque Singular

  • A single parcel of old Syrah vines on the Côte Brune, with a small proportion of co-fermented Viognier lending aromatic lift and textural grace
  • Forty-two months of ageing in new oak barrels — a commitment few estates would attempt
  • Production small enough that each bottle carries genuine scarcity, without the artifice that sometimes accompanies it
  • A profile that rewards patience: La Turque speaks quietly in youth and with increasing eloquence over decades

Why Aurum Lounge — and Why Now

Port Andratx has always attracted those who understand that the best things on Mallorca are rarely the loudest. The harbour is unhurried. The light in the late afternoon carries a warmth that feels almost amber. It is, in other words, the right kind of place for a wine that asks to be considered rather than consumed.

When we bring E. Guigal to our wine tastings at Aurum Lounge, the format matters as much as the wine itself. We do not simply open bottles and pour. The producers and their representatives come to Port Andratx to speak about the land, the decisions, the years. The tasting becomes a conversation — about the Rhône, about the philosophy behind extended maceration and long ageing, about what it means to commit to a place across generations. Alongside the wines, we serve tapas and traditional recipes chosen to complement the specific character of what is in the glass. La Turque, with its depth and aromatic complexity, calls for preparation that respects rather than competes.

This is the approach that distinguishes a genuine private members club on Mallorca from a well-stocked wine bar. More than fifty boutique winemakers present themselves with us each year. The human story — the family, the terroir, the reasoning behind each choice — is always at the centre. E. Guigal is no exception. If anything, their story is among the most compelling: a family that bet on quality at a time when the Côte-Rôtie was largely overlooked, and whose patience reshaped the international understanding of Northern Rhône wine.

The Mallorca Dimension

There is something fitting about encountering a wine of this calibre on an island that is itself undergoing a quiet oenological awakening. Mallorca's own winemakers — estates like ZALUD and others in our programme — are producing wines of increasing ambition and identity. The island's terroir, with its limestone soils and maritime temperament, yields wines that reward the same attentive approach we bring to the great French appellations. Tasting La Turque alongside the best of Mallorca's boutique producers is not a contradiction — it is, in fact, an education in what terroir-driven winemaking looks like across very different landscapes.

Members of Aurum Lounge experience this layering of perspective across more than twenty exclusive events each year. But the conversation begins, as it always should, with an open door.

Join Us in Person

Our next Monthly Wine Tasting takes place on 27 November 2026 at 19:00 at Aurum Lounge in Port Andratx. These are public evenings — no membership required — and they are the most direct way to understand what we do and why it matters. Come and taste. Come and listen. The best introduction to Aurum Lounge has always been the lounge itself.

You are welcome to reserve your place here, or to explore all upcoming events at your leisure. We look forward to meeting you.
